Backstamp: Old English Staffordshire Wares Made in Staffordshire England by the Bedford Potteries established in 1792. Imported exclusively for Coffey's Inc Charleston, West Virginia. Printed in a pretty pale shade of mulberry. This plate features scenes from the Starved Rock State Park - The Lounge, French Canyon, The Lodge, St Louis Canyon. Superb condition.
Printed backstamp "According to tradition Starved Rock received its name from an incident of Indian warfare, said to have taken place about 1769 or 1770. In 1769 the great chief Pontiac was assassinated by an Illinois Indian. Tribes friendly to Pontiac sought vengeance and legend has it that in the warfare which followed a part of the Illinois tribe was besieged on the rock, starved into submission and then annihilated" Also bears the US importers mark Johnroth.

Jug or Pitcher c1825
This fine jug is an enigma. At first sight this is from the Angus Seats Series by John & William Ridgway, a series of views of English and Scottish stately homes and castles, taken from Seats of the Nobility and Gentry engraved by W. Angus. However, this jug has a view of Lanercost Priory, Cumberland on one side taken from The Beauties of England & Wales by Britton & Bayley and an unidentified scene probably inspired by the same source on the other. The framing of the scene, the stringing round the rim and the floral border all have differences from the Ridgway series, so one is left with the conclusion that this jug is actually in the style of Angus Seats, but made by another potter. To assist searching we have left the maker and pattern unaltered, although not strictly correct as descriptors! The jug itself is a magnificent rare survivor and of excellent quality.
No backstamp.
Light all over crazing and a little wear and loss of glaze to the rim. Overall excellent condition and a stunning jug.

Meat Dish or Platter Raby Castle Durham c1820
This series was made by John & William Ridgway of Cauldon Works, Shelton, Staffordshire active 1814-1830 and comprises views of English and Scottish stately homes and castles, mainly taken from Seats of the Nobility and Gentry engraved by W. Angus. This scene is of Raby Castle in County Durham, at Staindrop, between Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland.
No maker's backstamp, which is usual with this Series, as it is rarely found marked.
Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. Collection identification label on back AGC 576.
The glaze is finely crazed and there is some associated staining, worse on the back than the front, also visible utensil marks. The rim is worn and discoloured. It is one of those pieces that once it is on the dresser it looks fine.

John and William Ridgway of Hanley made this popular British Scenery series and here an attractive dessert dish with wavy rim and ornate moulded side handle, with a view usually called Riverside Cottages.
Backstamp: Blue printed scroll British Scenery.
The glaze is crazed and there is wear to the rim with minor knocks and nibbles, mainly evident on the handle. The stilt marks are very evident, one in particular where the clay has parted just a little and is discoloured. Overall though a pretty dish.

The British Scenery series has recently been attributed to John and William Ridgway of Hanley, Staffordshire. A number of different views have been recorded and some identified, but neither view on this bowl appears in the records.
This bowl has the usual blue printed BRITISH SCENERY cartouche. There are a few signs of age and use and one old chip under the foot rim. The glaze is sound and this piece is bright and clean.
Bowls in superb condition, like this one, are rare.

Light crazing with just a little minor discolouration and small blemish which has discoloured inside. Underneath there is a large chip to the foot which barely shows through. Overall a delightful little piece.

Chinese Flowers may not have been the factory name for this pattern, but it is used today. The pattern is also found with hand enamelling in various colour ways. This is an attractive dish with gilt decoration to the rim and ornate side handles.

There is a little wear and a few blemishes inside the dish, a little minor wear to the gilt. Underneath the dish there are two small chips, one underneath the handle and the other to the foot rim. Sounds much worse than it looks this is a lovely dish.

The gilt is quite worn and there is a little wear inside, overall excellent condition.
