Maker: Riley Pattern: Unidentified Pattern colour
Attributed to John & Richard Riley of Burslem, Staffordshire active 1796-1828. A large, gorgeous jug or pitcher of elegant shape, made of white translucent porcelain, with gadroon or pie crust rims to neck and foot and decorated with a floral design in the Gaudy Welsh or Dutch style in Imari colours and gilt. The lovely rich blues, terracotta and gilt are enhanced by the intricate moulded flower decoration on both sides of the jug.
Just a minor knock to the foot and fine crazing to the glaze, otherwise absolutely wonderful and rare to find a jug this large in such excellent condition.
No maker's backstamp, but red script pattern number 177 on base.
A similar jug may be seen in The Potteries Museum, Stoke on Trent and is illustrated in "An Illustrated Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain" by Geoffrey Godden on page 278 plate 486.
Dimensions: 1.95 ltr 22 cm high / 3.25 pint 8.75 ins high
