Maker: Walsh Pattern: Mausoleum of Sultan Purveiz near Allahabad
At one time this pattern was considered to be one of the series of India patterns by Herculaneum, despite the border design being quite different. Subsequently marked examples have been found enabling this pattern to be attributed to William Walsh of Newcastle Street, Burslem, Staffordshire, active c1815 to 1822.
The scene depicts the Mausoleum of Sultan Purveiz, near Allahabad in India, with a procession of the Moghul or Mohammedan, Governor of Delhi in the foreground and is a combination of various elements from different aquatints published in 1796 in Oriental Scenery by Thomas Daniell. The pattern is engraved with lots of detail and carefully printed in varying tones of blue, which convey a powerful sense of both perspective and scale.
No backstamp as is usual.
Overall in excellent condition. Minor wear to rim, with some surface scratching to face and three stilt marks on border. The glaze is sound and this is a really bright and clean plate.
No maker's backstamp.
Dimensions: 25 cm / 9.75 ins
