Maker: Wood and Challinor  Pattern: Continental Views Series

Wood and Challinor of Tunstall, Staffordshire were active 1828 to 1845 and their Continental Views Series, consists of named European scenes. Many travellers have arrived in Italy from Switzerland via the Simplon Pass, using a road that was begun in 1800 under Napoleon. Today though they are just as likely to be on a train hurtling through the Simplon Tunnel. This scene appears to be previously unrecorded and shows the Swiss village of Simplon-Dorf set amongst the mountains.
Blue printed cartouche backstamp, including Simplon and the initials W&C.
The glaze is finely crazed, but otherwise excellent condition.
