Maker: Riley Pattern: Europa
Made by John & Richard Riley of Nile Street and Hill Works, Burslem active 1796-1828. The scene in part is taken from Claude's painting Europa, which is now in the Royal Collection. It depicts Europa on the back of a tame bull, which form Zeus had taken to get close to her! She found him so gentle that she stayed on his back as he swam to Crete.
Backstamp: Riley's Semi-China.
Crazed with some discolouration although this is mainly on the back and surface scratching. There is also wear on the back and to the rim, the latter resulting in loss of glaze. Overall in spite of all this is a lovely dish.
Dimensions: 37.5 cm x 30.5 cm / 14.75 ins x 12 ins
