Tea Tray and Urn c1882

Spode Unidentified Pattern Tea Tray and Urn c1882

Maker: Spode  Pattern: Unidentified Pattern

Absolutely gorgeous hand painted landscape scenes, enhanced with burned gold decoration to the rims. The urn has two decorative scroll handles with fixed rings and a moulded finial to the lid, all with gold decoration. The large tray revolves on its splayed decorated foot and the central urn is fixed and remains stationary in the middle! Complete with three small cups and saucers all with different scenes, a delightful little cream jug and a small sugar bowl; all in bone china.
The complete set was hand painted by William Yale, who joined Copeland Spode in 1869 and was soon established as one of their star painters, famous for his high quality landscapes painted freehand on china. The tray bears his signature : W Yale.
Overall in good condition. One of the side handles on the urn has been restuck and part of the fixed ring is missing, the finial on the lid has been restuck and the tip is missing and inside the urn are a few minor hair or stress lines. One cup has a small rim chip. Generally some wear to gilt. Otherwise bright and clean.
Typical Copeland Spode impressed and printed backstamps, including impressed date marks for 1882. Paper label for Thomas Goode, the London retailers and china merchants to the Royal Family.
Magnificent centre piece of good size and stature, with the added cachet of considerable rarity; each of Yale's works was effectively a unique masterpiece.

Dimensions: Tray diameter 44.5 cm / Tray diameter 17.5 ins
