Maker: Spode Pattern: Duncan Scenes brown
In 1849 W T Copeland commissioned Edward Duncan to paint a series of sepia watercolours, which were to inspire an extensive range of tableware and in the following year Copeland Spode registered the new Rural Scenes pattern. It was produced susequently without any border design and was called Duncan Scenes and around 1878 there was limited production of Duncan Scenes printed in brown on cream bodied earthenware in Amien Embossed shape with embossed gadroon rims.
The Copeland family retained such a dinner service as part of their private collection and this passed by descent to Robert Copeland from whom we acquired this part service.
The part set comprises 6 x 10" dinner plates, 4 x 10 inch soup plates, 4 x 8.75" pudding plates, 4 x 6.5" side plates, 1 x large oval platter with tree and well 19", 1 x oval platter 15.25", 1 x oval platter 11", 1 x covered vegetable dish, 1 x sauce tureen with ladle. Condition is generally good with some wear from use and a few minor chips.
