Mayer Canova Dinner Plate c1835

Maker: Mayer  Pattern: Canova

By Thomas Mayer of Cliff Bank Works, Stoke 1826 to 1835 and Brook Street, Longport 1836 to 1838. The pattern is of a prominent classical urn set in a romantic, imaginary landscape. It may have been inspired by Antonio Canova (1757-1822), who was an Italian sculptor working in the neo-classical style. He lived and worked in England for many years and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. After his death Countess Albrizzi published The Works of Canova in 1824, which was a catalogue of the sculptures he had created for English patrons.
Mayer's Canova pattern consists of a series of similar, but different views applied to different items.
Tiny blemish in glaze, otherwise lovely condition. Blue printed cartouche of urn on a plinth, which incorporates the words Canova and Stoneware.

Dimensions: 26.5 cm / 10.5 ins
