Maker: Mayer Pattern: Canova
By Thomas Mayer of Cliff Bank Works, Stoke 1826 to 1835 and Brook Street, Longport 1836 to 1838. A wonderful ewer and bowl, the bowl with full pattern both inside and out. The pattern may have been inspired by Antonio Canova (1757-1822), an Italian sculptor. He lived and worked in England for many years and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. Mayer's Canova pattern consists of a series of similar, but different views applied to different items.
No backstamp.
The bowl has some wear to the rim and underneath to the foot rim. The foot rim also has a manufacturing fault which has been glazed and inside there is some surface scratching. The ewer has a little light crazing and underneath a little wear, overall though excellent condition. Ewer holds 3.75 pint.
Dimensions: Ewer 25.5 cm high bowl 33.5 cm diameter 11 cm deep / Ewer 10 ins high bowl 13 ins diameter 4.25 ins dee
