Hamilton Canton River Supper Set Segment c1815

Maker: Hamilton  Pattern: Canton River

In 1785 Thomas & William Daniell set off on a voyage to India and China that would last almost 10 years. On their return they published in 1810 their book of narrative and engravings "Picturesque Voyage to India by the way of China". Canton River is a composite view taken from Daniells' book and elsewhere. The design is also known as Canton River Scene, Sampan and Chinese Junk & Pagodas. This lovely covered dish with fabulous lion finial to the cover would have been part of a supper set.
No backstamp.
Both pieces are crazed with the base having some light discolouration and a small under rim chip to one corner. The cover has a small chip to one corner and a hairline to the rim and the lion has a tiny unglazed spot. Taken overall a most attractive item.

Dimensions: 31 cm x 15 cm / 12.25 ins x 5.75 ins
