Maker: Masons  Pattern: Japan Basket blue with colour

Masons Patent Ironstone China large jug or pitcher, really more of a ewer, decorated in a traditional Japanese inspired design, which is sometimes known simply by the name Japan. Octagonal, with a magnificent serpent handle, this a Masons favourite known as Hydra or Antique shape.
In excellent condition, with only a few signs of use and wear, which are perhaps to be expected after 175 years.
Typical blue printed backstamp, with MASON'S over crown and drape, incorporating Patent Ironstone China. Also a rare impressed mark of a Star of Garter with Masons Granite China in the garter circle. See Godden's Guide to Ironstone page 101 for more on this rare mark.
The backstamps and use of the words Granite China suggest that this jug was made during the C J Mason & Co period, dating from about 1830.
