Maker: Masons  Pattern: Kings College Cambridge

An absolutely delightful little plate and something of a rarity. In addition to the impressed two line backstamp Masons Patent Ironstone China it also has the blue printed backstamp of James Lawrance. James Lawrance was appointed assistant cook in 1803 and college cook in 1817. On his death in 1843 he was succeeded by his son, also James, who continued as head cook until his own death in 1891. When James senior took charge of the kitchens he ordered the first college dinner service from Masons, decorated with this view of the Chapel, and this continued in use with replacements until the end of the 19th century. This small plate has a few minor signs of age, mainly on the back, but overall is in excellent condition.
