Masons Kings College Cambridge Meat Dish or Platter c1870

Maker: Masons  Pattern: Kings College Cambridge

Used at Kings College, Cambridge for most of the 1800s this service was made for them originally by Masons and subsequently their successors Francis Morley and G L Ashworth & Bros. Kings was founded in 1440 and depicted on the plate is the west front of the famous Chapel, built between 1446 and 1538.
Masons were famous for their Patent Ironstone China. This platter has a blue printed backstamp Masons over a crown and Patent Ironstone China plus Ashworths, which would date it 1862 or later. There is also the name Lawrance printed. James Lawrance father and son were College Cooks at Kings and had to provide the cutlery and china as well as the food. The china was marked with their name to show ownership and to ensure they received their china back at the end of their contract!
The platter will come with a short written history of the College and the dinner service.
